C is for Cookie. Is it Good Enough for You?

Let's say that a friend gave you a package of soft and chewy, chocolate chip cookies for your birthday. You open the package, and they taste okay, but you realize they are a bit dry and aren't quite as soft and chewy as you thought they'd be. You look at the expiration date and it turns out they expired two months ago! You decide that even though they are slightly old, they are good enough.  But wouldn't you rather have something better, like an unexpired package of cookies that really are soft and chewy? Or would you rather have something that's best of all, like homemade cookies that are soft, chewy, warm and chocolatey? I definitely would want the best! Not only does this apply to cookies, but to everything we do in life.

Elder Dallin H. Oaks

Elder Dallin H. Oaks, an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ, gave a talk on occupying our time with good things, better things, and the best things, appropriately entitled, Good, Better, Best. There's a lot of good things in this world that we could be doing, like reading, participating in sports, spending time with our friends, etc. But even though they are good, are there better and best things that we could be doing with our time. Elder Oaks said, "We should begin by recognizing the reality that just because something is good is not a sufficient reason for doing it. The number of good things we can do far exceeds the time available to accomplish them. Some things are better than good, and these are the things that should command priority attention in our lives." He continues, "We have to forego some good things in order to choose others that are better or best because they develop faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and strengthen our families." Those are the things that matter, reading the scriptures, serving others, eating dinner as a family, etc.

It's good to do good things, it's better to do better things, and it's best to do the best things. Luckily, we don't have to do those better and best things on our own, we have family and friends to help us, and most importantly we have Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ to help us. So the choice is yours...Which cookie will you choose?

Thanks for reading. Until next time...

  1. By the way, this analogy is inspired by Elder Hancock and Elder Smith. Sister Maneha thanks you for the cookies. And I thank you for giving me something to blog about.
